How much does trade mark registration cost in 2026? Fees and expenses to consider
The question seems simple: how much does registering a trade mark cost? In reality, the price depends on three separate factors: where you want to protect the sign, how many classes of goods or services you need, and how much preliminary work is required before filing. Focusing only on the official fee is often the quickest way to underestimate the issue.
The cost of an Italian trade mark
For an initial Italian national filing, the official registration fee is currently €101 for one class, plus €34 for each additional class. Further costs may arise from the filing method, professional representation and any charges associated with the chosen procedure.
This figure therefore does not measure the value of the legal work: it covers the filing. The key question is whether the trade mark you are about to file is really the right one and whether the selected classes protect the business activity that matters to you.
How much an EU trade mark costs
For an EU trade mark application filed online, the EUIPO fee is €850 for the first class, €50 for the second and €150 for each class from the third onwards. Once registered, an EU trade mark has unitary effect throughout the European Union and lasts ten years, renewable.
This does not mean that an EU trade mark is always the best choice. If the business operates exclusively in Italy, if problematic earlier rights exist in other countries, or if the budget is limited, a national strategy may make more sense.
The often overlooked cost: getting the filing wrong
The greatest financial risk is not the official fee, but the cost of a pointless filing. A trade mark may be too descriptive, conflict with earlier rights, be filed for the wrong classes, or protect only the logo when the real commercial value lies in the name.
Before filing, it is therefore sensible to check at least registrability, earlier rights, ownership, territory and the goods or services to be claimed.
Why a quotation should cover more than the filing cost
A serious professional service always distinguishes official fees from advisory work. The former are public and calculable; the latter depends on the work needed to reduce risk and build protection consistent with the business.
